Hospital Safety Grade – A Four Letter Affair
The report, named Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, assigns letter grades of either A, B, C or D to acute-care hospitals scattered across the country. The report, published on a bi-annual basis, ranks states from the best to the worst by assigning A to D grades.
The report, which commenced in 2012, has seen marked differences in safety in some states since its inception. For instance, Rhode Island, which occupied the 50th position five years ago, is now at the top of the pile in the current analysis.
Transparency Goes Hand In Hand With Hospital Safety
Ms. Leah Binder, president and CEO of Leapfrog was quoted saying that the company has learned about the importance as well as impact transparency makes has on patient safety. She added that their decision to make safety data available to the public has prompted or fortified massive changes in communities and states across the country. Ms. Binder also said that all parties have successfully worked together to improve health care safety and quality.
It is interesting to note that infections and errors are the third leading cause of mortality in the country. It therefore behooves companies such as Leapfrog to make sure Americans know which hospitals prevent these incidents the best.
Here are some of the highlights from the report:
- The states which received the highest number of “A” grades included Maine, Hawaii, Virginia, Idaho and Rhode Island
- California, Illinois, Florida, Washington DC, Mississippi, New York and Maryland hospitals received the majority of “F” grades
- 832 hospitals received an “A”, 662 A “B”, 964 a “C”, 159 a “D”, and 15 an “F”
