Dangerous Toys Recalls – Should I Be Worried?

Plush toys provide children with hours of fun as well as keep them out of trouble. That being said, not all plush toys are made the same, and some manufacturers fail to put their products through extensive testing in order to make sure they are safe for the general public.

Plush Toys Recalled

Earlier this week, a New Hampshire toy manufacturing company recalled a number of plush toys currently in the public domain due to a choking hazard. The toys in question include Chewy the English Bulldog, Oliver the Bear and Charlotte the Fox.

The toys, targeted at toddlers between the ages of 2 to 8, are manufactured in China and distributed in the continental US by Douglas Company Inc., of Keene, N.H. it’s estimated that there are 25,000 of these plush toys that have been sold or distributed to various shops across the country. Upon closer inspection, it was shown that they eyes can loosen and detach, making it likely for children to put these parts in their mouths and swallow them.

The toys, sold at specialty toy stores across the country between July 2014 and April 2017 go for a retail price of $20. The company is asking consumers to return these plush toys and contact them for a full refund.

Dangerous Toys are an Ever-Present Problem

Dangerous toys have been a mainstay in the American consumer market for decades. Part of the problem lies in manufacturing companies and distributors not doing the needed due diligence to make sure these are safe before making them available for the general public. Some of the reasons why manufacturers don’t carry this out are due to the very low safety requirements proposed by different regulatory bodies, the alleged high cost of carrying out these tests, plain negligence and the rush to beat the competition at the start of a new season.

Dangerous toys have been shown to burn, cut, choke or deafen children due to removable, sharp or loud parts which should not be anywhere near a child who doesn’t have the mental capacity to understand the inherent danger found in these products.
