Apple Brown Betty

Our staff LOVES desserts. Every day of the week, someone brings in something they made at home. Usually by lunch, it’s gone! Cakes, cookies, muffins, pastries – you name it, we’ve made it. Oftentimes clients stop by the office and are lucky enough to grab a piece of dessert before it is all gone. Over the years, clients have asked for recipes for desserts they tried at the office. Thus, the idea of sharing a recipe each month in our newsletter. We hope you enjoy this dessert — Apple Brown Betty — as much as we all do!

INGREDIENTS — Apple Brown Betty

  • 5 Honeycrisp Apples peeled cored and sliced (see notes)
  • 1 lemon juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter cold

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray the bottom of a 9 inch casserole dish with nonstick baking spray.
  2. Toss apples with lemon juice and place in the bottom of a 9 inch casserole dish or 9 inch pie dish.
  3. In a food processor combine your flour, brown sugar, sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves and salt; pulse several times to combine.  Drop in butter 1 tablespoon at a time pulsing between each tablespoon or until butter is fully incorporated.
  4. Crumble over the apples.  Bake for 40-45 minutes or until very lightly browned. Serve warm.
