Each month we highlight an organization or group which we support, with time or money, and we encourage you to do the same. We support a wide range of groups throughout the year, some national in scope, others may involve a fundraiser for an individual in need. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Someone takes their own life nearly every 14 minutes, and whether it’s due to mental illness or highly stressful conditions, it is a tragedy that destroys lives and families. We at McCready, García & Leet sincerely wish there were no need for The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), yet there clearly is and we support their life-altering and potentially life-saving work completely.
The AFSP is the nation’s leading organization bringing together people across communities and backgrounds to understand and prevent suicide and to help heal the pain it causes. Individuals, families, and communities who have been personally touched by suicide are the moving force behind everything they do. The AFSP:
- Strives for a world that is free of suicide.
- Supports research, because understanding the causes of suicide is vital to saving lives.
- Educates others in order to foster understanding and inspire action.
- Offers a caring community to those who have lost someone they love to suicide, or who are struggling with thoughts of suicide themselves.
- Advocates to ensure that federal, state, and local governments do all they can to prevent suicide, and to support and care for those at risk.
