New York Attorney General Letitia James recently filed a lawsuit naming Amazon as the defendant citing failure to provide sufficient safety and health measures for workers at its facilities based in New York as well as the e-commerce company’s actions that sought to retaliate against employees that spoke out about the unsafe work conditions.

Amazon Violated State Labor Law During COVID-19

Amazon was allegedly accused of violating State Labor Law by failing to stem the spread of COVID-19 when over 250 of its workers tested positive for the virus. The billion dollar company was in particular accused of violating State Labor Law by failing to uphold contact tracing protocol, insufficiently cleaning and disinfecting its work locations, and failing to permit workers to take needed precautions to protect themselves from COVID-19.

Amazon To Pay Fines Due to COVID-19 Violations

In addition, Amazon was accused of unlawfully disciplining and letting go of workers that had spoken out about the company’s lack of compliance when it came to safety protocol for COVID-19 as laid out by OSHA. The office of the Attorney General also recommended that Amazon change its health safety policies, award liquidated damages, back pay, emotional distress and other damages a specific employee named Christian Smalls, as well as give up the money it made as a result of breaking the law.
