Hands-Free Technology May Contribute To Distracted Driving
The CDC recently released data stating that 9 people lose their lives and more than 1,100 are injured every day on account of distracted driving. Distracted driving can be defined as driving while carrying out another activity which splits your attention away from the task of operating a vehicle. Distracted driving in Illinois, as in other states, is primarily caused by texting or talking on one’s cell phone.

Hands-Free Devices Are Part of The Problem
Hands-free technology came up as a way of reducing the risks associated with phone use while on the road. Most cars today come with hands-free systems built into the car which makes it possible for drivers to prompt their phones to call certain individuals as well as text using their voice and have the system read out a message aloud. While hands-free systems may seem incredibly useful, they are not without risk. In fact, studies from 2016 have shown that they exacerbate distracted driving, increasing the incidence of car accidents in Illinois.
What Does The Law Say?
You’re banned from talking on your cell phone while driving in Illinois. In other states such as Missouri, you can text and call other individuals while driving as long as you’re an experienced driver. So far, over 15 states and the District of Columbia have banned talking on the cell phone while operating a vehicle, and 37 states have banned texting while driving.
Studies Show Hands-Free Systems May Contribute to Driver Distraction
The University of Utah recently carried out two studies to determine driver distraction or lack of it while using hands-free devices. The study concluded that drivers are still distracted when presented with a program that used flashing lights to gauge their reaction to them. The studies also showed that these systems were prone to error leading to frustration on the part of the driver, ending in distraction and the likelihood for an accident to occur. Lastly, the studies did not show improved distraction scores even when drivers practiced with voice commands.
