What Type of License Does a Tow Truck Need in Missouri?

Here are specific rules and conditions under the Uniform Commercial Driver License Act:

• A driver of a tow truck with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of twenty-six thousand one or more pounds, which includes the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of any towed vehicle of ten thousand one (10,001) or more pounds, should hold a valid class A license with suitable restrictions and endorsements.
• A tow truck driver with a GVWR of twenty-six thousand one or more pounds plus any other towing vehicle with a GVWR of ten thousand pounds (10,000) and below must hold a valid Class A or Class B license with appropriate restrictions and endorsements.
• A driver whose tow truck has a GVWR of twenty-six thousand or fewer must hold a Class C license if a subsequent move towed a vehicle placard for dangerous material.
• Suppose a tow truck driver intends to move a vehicle under emergency conditions from the site of malfunction or defect. In that case, the driver must hold a valid driving license category— such a driver doesn’t need an H, N, P, T, or X endorsement.
• Suppose a tow truck driver intends to move a vehicle in a second or subsequent move from a repair or disposal facility to another. In that case, they should hold a valid license of appropriate class and endorsement of the vehicle being towed. The exception to this rule is a tow truck driver moving a passenger vehicle without a P endorsement.
