It is estimated that about a million people in the United States suffer from internal cystitis, also known as IC. Elmiron is a drug approved by the FDA in 1996 which alleviates the bladder irritation that is connected to internal cystitis by stabilizing the inner layer of the bladder, helping sufferers avoid the pain and discomfort associated with this condition. Doctors first noticed the toxic nature of Elmiron to the eyes when they were examining patients at the Emory Eye Center located in Atlanta. One patient after the other presented with macular damage, which subsequently attracted the diagnosis of Pigmentary maculopathy.

Upon closer examination, it was discovered that all six patients that presented with this pathology had been using Elmiron for a long time, which then led to the publishing of a report which looked at the possible toxicity to the human eye of Elmiron.

It is estimated from the report that about a quarter of the people that take or took Elmiron were negatively affected by the vision-damaging effects of the drug, with almost all of them showing signs of eye damage or maculopathy. Unfortunately, it was determined that the damage caused by Elmiron to people’s eyesight was permanent, and that even stopping the medication did little to reverse said damage.
